A former Hannaford supervisor is suing the grocery store’s parent company.

According to the Portland Press Herald, James McLean of Cape Elizabeth claims he was fired because he reported racially insensitive remarks aimed at another employee. McLean alleges that another supervisor called a Mexican employee “chico” and “my Mexican.”

Hannaford told McLean he was let go for insubordination.

The Press Herald reports McLean is seeking punitive damages, a jury trial and a statement from Hannaford to employees that future retaliation will not be tolerated.
