Health officials push for more vaccinations as highly contagious COVID variant spreads in Maine

Some Maine health experts are warning about the increased spread of the delta variant of COVID-19, especially among people who are unvaccinated.

The delta variant is known to be more contagious and potentially cause more severe illness.

Testing at Maine hospitals and healthcare facilities suggests the variant is continuing to spread throughout the state. According to CBS 13, a third of the tests done on COVID mutations at Maine Medical Center on Monday were the delta variant.

Dr. James Jarvis with Northern Light Health says COVID patients are skewing younger than before, and their BMI is lower than what was seen earlier in the pandemic.

Dr. Dora Anne Mills with MaineHealth says the vast majority of people with the variant are totally unvaccinated, and the few vaccinated people who do get it experience mild symptoms.
