An Oxford man was sentenced Friday to 38 years behind bars for the killing of his stepson.

Thomas Tellier said he was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed 27-year-old Nicholas Trynor in Mexico on Aug. 6, 2022.

Tellier claimed that he felt threatened by his stepson after getting into an argument with him, and that he went to grab a shotgun to force him out of the house before Trynor came at him.

Court documents showed that Trynor told Tellier to stop after shooting him a first time, but Tellier still fired a second shot.

The judge also took into account Trynor’s younger brother, who was outside when the shooting happened and heard the killing.
