BELFAST, Maine (WGAN) Jury selection got underway Thursday in the murder trial of Sharon Carillo.

Carillo is charged in the killing of her daughter, 10-year-old Marissa Kennedy, who died in Stockton Springs in 2018. Sharon Carillo, along with Marissa’s step father Julio Carillo, were both accused of beating the girl for months leading up to her death.

A judge on Wednesday determined Sharon Carillo is competent to stand trial. Her attorneys claimed she was also a victim of Julio Carillo’s abuse, and has an intellectual disability.

Julio Carillo pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 55 years behind bars for the killing.

Sharon Carillo’s trial was set to begin by Friday, and is expected to take two days, according to WGME 13.
