The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has upheld a conviction for a man who shot and killed a police officer in 2018.

According to the Bangor Daily News, 33-year-old John Williams had his murder conviction upheld on Tuesday. Williams is serving a life sentence for the fatal shooting of Somerset County Deputy Cpl. Eugene Cole in Norridgewock four years ago.

Williams’ attorney claimed that information about one of the arresting officer’s disciplinary record was withheld from the defense, and was seeking a new trial.

The first appeal was rejected in November of 2020.

Maine State Police Trooper Tyler Maloon was suspended for one day for failing to report another officer’s misconduct during the arrest. Lt. Glenn Lang allegedly hit Williams twice while he was being taken into custody.

Justices concluded that the evidence would not have changed the outcome of the trial.
