Maine labor officials say 4,640 initial claims were filed last week for state unemployment benefits. An additional 7,043 initial claims were filed for the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program.

The Maine Department of Labor said Thursday morning that it’s now reporting those numbers separately to provide added clarity to Maine’s unemployment situation.

Collectively, 11,500 individuals filed claims last week.

The change follows a report that Maine was knowingly reporting misleading jobless data.

Labor commissioner Laura Fortman has said there’s a lot of misunderstanding of unemployment numbers.

The department said Thursday it has paid out approximately $425 million in unemployment benefits since March 15.
