AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Maine is moving up the opening of campgrounds to state residents by more than a week, allowing them to open on Friday ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, officials said Tuesday.

Campgrounds, including recreational vehicle parks, will have enhanced health and safety precautions.

“We believe allowing private campgrounds to open with strict health and safety precautions to Maine residents minimizes risks while supporting mental and physical health, particularly during the long Memorial Day weekend,” Gov. Janet Mills said in a statement.

But the state is delaying the June 1 reopening of gyms and nail salons based on new information about the transmission of the coronavirus.

The changes demonstrate that the administration is remaining flexible about the reopening of the economy, Mills said.

Maine expects to announce new re-start dates for nail salons and indoor gyms and fitness centers in early June.
