Maine berry farmers say warm weather helped usher in early strawberry season

Strawberry season in Maine has arrived early this year, thanks in part to a warm spring and a June heat wave.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Mainers will get to pick strawberries early at many farms, which are already open or planning to soon. Commercial wholesale picking has already been going on for the last couple of weeks.

Some like Penny Jordan with Jordan’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth tell the paper the quality of the crop this year is good.

Some farmers and experts say the early yield is due in part to a warm, dry spring and a lack of rain and snow that made it easier for field work to get underway. Strawberry farmers are also using black plastic mulch and fabric row covers, which can speed up the process and extend the growing season.
