AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Maine’s governor says President Donald Trump’s move to withdraw from an international climate accord should motivate states to take the lead in fighting global warming.

The United States has started the process of pulling out of the Paris climate agreement of 2015. Maine Democratic Gov. Janet Mills called it an “unparalleled abdication of U.S. leadership.”

Mills says her state will work with others on issues such as creation of clean energy jobs and protection of natural resources.

It’s not the first time Mills, elected in 2018, has said her state can lead on climate. She announced at the UN Climate Action Summit in September that her state would go carbon neutral by 2045.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said the Paris accord is unfair to the U.S.
