PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) _ Hunters in northern Maine are set to begin rotating who is allowed to shoot wild turkeys for the next few weeks.

Maine’s wild turkey season runs from late April to early June, and hunters are allowed to take two birds in most of the state. But in far northern Maine, where the turkey population is more protected, they are limited to only one.

Hunters who were born in an even-numbered year were allowed to hunt turkeys from April 30 to Saturday. Those born in an odd year will take over from Monday to May 12. They will trade weeks again until May 26. Everybody is allowed to participate in the final week, from May 28 to June 2.

The state’s turkey population was rebuilt from near collapse to about 60,000.
