A Tremont man is pleading guilty to several charges in federal court after reportedly leaving the scene of a single vehicle crash in Acadia National Park.

Prosecutors say 42-year-old Gregory Harper turned himself in two days after crashing his pickup truck into a tree on Seal Cove Road in Acadia National Park and fled the scene.

They say Harper told then he swerved to avoid a deer. During a search of his truck, rangers located open alcohol cans.

Harper pleaded guilty Tuesday to failing to report a motor vehicle accident, failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle, and carrying or storing an open container of alcohol inside a vehicle.

He faces up to six months in prison, a maximum fine of $5,000, and up to five years of probation on each count. He’ll be sentenced at a later date.

The National Park Service investigated the case with assistance from the Southwest Harbor Police Department.
