Maine has reached another vaccination milestone, even as the state sees a steady rise in new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.
Governor Janet Mills said Wednesday that 80% of residents eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine have received at least their first dose.
Maine is one of just eight states in the country to hit that milestone.
The governor’s office says Maine is tied for the third best state in the nation in the percentage of residents who are fully vaccinated. More than 65 percent of all residents, including children under 12 who are not yet eligible for a vaccine, are fully vaccinated.
Mills says Maine’s vaccination numbers show progress, but she’s again reiterated her call for those who haven’t gotten their shots to do so as soon as possible.
“I applaud Maine people for their willingness to roll up their sleeves, but the surge in cases and hospitalizations driven by the more dangerous and more transmissible Delta variant shows that more people must get vaccinated to stem the tide of this pandemic,” said Governor Mills.
On Monday, Mills released a separate statement encouraging vaccinations, citing the recent FDA approval of Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine as another reason to get immunized.
