OLD TOWN, Maine (AP) A Maine pulp mill is reopening after shedding hundreds of jobs when it shut down in 2015.

The Bangor Daily News reports the new owner of the Old Town pulp mill has hired 130 workers and plans to reopen the facility and begin producing pulp by August.

ND Paper, an Illinois-based subsidiary of a Chinese paper manufacturer, bought the mill in October. Since then, more than 1,000 people have applied for the open positions.

The company says it plans to produce 275,000 air-dried metric tons of unbleached pulp, compared to the 155,000 metric tons it produced before it closed four years ago.

The previous owner blamed the closure on a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar, excess pulp supply in the marketplace and expensive lumber wood costs.
