(AP/WGAN) The Maine CDC reported a whopping 390 new COVID-19 cases Thursday. It was the highest single-day total since early May.

No new deaths were reported Thursday, leaving the death toll at

Thursday’s case count was up from the total announced Wednesday, when the state reported 287 cases.

The director of the Maine CDC predicted Tuesday that cases would skyrocket because the agency had to sort through 1,700 positive test results. Dr. Nirav Shah said the agency would have to determine how many of those cases were new cases.

Maine health authorities have said the delta variant is responsible for almost all the new COVID-19 cases in the state. New cases of the virus have been climbing over the course of the summer in Maine, as they have around the country.

The pandemic has led to 926 deaths in the state, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said. The agency has also reported more than 74,000 confirmed virus cases since the start of the pandemic.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Maine has risen over the past two weeks from 172.83 new cases per day on Aug. 10 to 175.00 new cases per day on Aug. 24. The seven-day rolling average of daily deaths in Maine has risen over the past two weeks from 0.14 deaths per day on Aug. 10 to 2.43 deaths per day on Aug. 24.

The AP is using data collected by Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering to measure outbreak caseloads and deaths across the United States.
