The Maine Senate has approved a bill that would allow online voter registration.

The Portland Press Herald reports the bill received initial approval in a 22-12 vote on Thursday without debate but with Republicans in opposition. It was approved in the Maine House on Wednesday along a similar party-line vote.

Democratic Representative Teresa Pierce of Falmouth is sponsoring the bill.

Under current law, Mainers can request an application to vote online but have to return the application in person.
