Man Arrested After Burglary, Police Chase in Waterboro

WATERBORO, Maine (WGAN)  The York County Sheriff’s Office says a North Berwick man is facing multiple charges after a burglary and police chase.

Police say they got a call from a woman house-sitting for her brother in Waterboro.  The woman told police things appeared “out of place” and that she thought her brother’s vehicle had been moved.

Deputies say they found the residence had been burglarized by someone who forced their way in by a rear door.  The homeowner suspected a former roommate, Kyle Berounsky, may have been squatting in the house, knowing the owner was going to be on vacation.

Police began to search for Berounsky, who had been stopped in Wells earlier in the day.  While that search was happening, another deputy made a traffic stop in Waterboro.  It turned out to be Berounsky, who fled the scene.

Police say after a 12-mile chase that reached speeds of 100 m.p.h, Berounsky ditched his car and ran into a friend’s house where he was taken into custody.

The 29-year-old was arrested and charged with eluding a police officer and burglary.  His bail was set at $5,000 cash.  He’s expected to make his first court appearance via video today.
