A Portland man was arrested after police say he fled the scene of a head-on crash in New Gloucester.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says the collision happened on Lewiston Rd. Saturday around 10:30 a.m.

When deputies arrived, they learned that a man had fled the scene of the accident.

After a search that involved at least on K9, William Werner, 33, was located in the basement of a home on Peacock Hill Road, about a half-mile from the scene of the accident.

The sheriff’s department says Werner crossed the center line before striking another vehicle.

The person behind the wheel of the second vehicle was evaluated at the scene and released.

Deputies do not believe alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.
