BELFAST, Maine (AP) A Maine man serving a 55-year sentence for the death of his stepdaughter has pleaded the fifth in the trial of his estranged wife, who’s also accused in the fatal beating.

Julio Carrillo on Friday declined to answer any questions from defense attorneys, citing his Fifth Amendment constitutional right to avoid self-incriminating statements. He already pleaded guilty and was sentenced for his role in the death of 10-year-old Marissa Kennedy.

Lawyers for Sharon Carrillo, the girl’s mother, contend Julio Carrillo abused both of them and that he alone inflicted the fatal injuries in February 2018 in Stockton Springs.
