According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Henry Brooks, 46, of Hope, drowned in Seven Tree Pond in Union Saturday afternoon after attempting to save his two daughters from drowning.

Portland Press Herald reports that Brooks’s daughters, who are 12 and 13 years old were swimming in the pond at Ayers Park when one of the girls fell into deeper water where the river empties into the pond. The other girl attempted to rescue her sister, but both were swept away by the current.

Brooks jumped into the water to save them at around 4:30 p.m. His 27-year-old son put on a life jacket and jumped in soon after.

Brook’s son was able to swim to his sisters and pull them onto a nearby dock. However, he said when he turned back for Brooks, he was nowhere to be found.

A search was conducted by game wardens, the Union Fire and Resue, and Knox County Sheriff’s Office on land and by boat but were unable to locate Brooks.

Three Maine Warden Service divers were called to the scene and found Brook’s body at around 7:30 p.m. near the dock the girls had been pulled onto.
