BANGOR (AP) A homeless man convicted of setting a delivery truck on fire and killing two transients sleeping inside has been sentenced to life in prison in Maine.

Justice Ann Murray imposed the maximum penalty on John De St. Croix. De St. Croix argued with one of the victims before the fire was set, and surveillance video placed him at the scene in Bangor.

The victims, 43-year-old Michael Bridges and 36-year-old Desiree York, were found dead in the back of the burning truck in March of 2018. Court documents indicate De St. Croix told authorities he’d been drinking with the victims in the hours before the pair was found dead.

Authorities say De St. Croix is the one who called 911, and that he confessed to setting the fire.

He was convicted last year of arson and murder.
