Man pleads guilty to shooting at Portland Police Department, sentenced to 6 years

PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) A Portland man who fired shots at the city’s police department will spend six years behind bars.

Cumberland County District Attorney Jonathan Sahrbeck said 33-year-old Abdikareem Hassan entered guilty pleas on charges related to the shooting which happened in July 2020.

Hassan was charged with Reckless Conduct with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault on a Police Officer, Operating after License Revocation and Refusing to Submit to Arrest.

Police say Hassan drove by the police department the night of Jul. 5th, 2020 and fired several shots through the building’s garage, where an officer was seated in his cruiser. No one was injured.

Police say Hassan resisted arrest and fought officers before he could be taken into custody.
