AUBURN, Maine (AP) A man who hit a Massachusetts state trooper with a stolen Jeep is in jail in Maine, where he was hiding with a child rape suspect, officials said.

The man faces charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, negligent operation and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, among others, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

The Jeep belonged to family members of the other man who was facing charges of child rape in Massachusetts, police said. The two were together when they were arrested Tuesday in Auburn, Maine.

Police say the Jeep fled a traffic stop on Route 1A in Revere, Massachusetts, before driving down a dead-end street. After ramming the cruiser, the suspect struck the trooper, who had left the cruiser, police said.

The two men are being held without bail at the Androscoggin County Jail while awaiting extradition to Massachusetts. Jail paperwork did not indicate whether the men had attorneys.

The trooper who was struck by the Jeep on Saturday is recovering from his injuries, police said.
