DURHAM, Maine (WGAN)  Game Wardens say they have recovered the body of a five-year-old boy who fell into the Androscoggin River.

Wardens say the body of Valerio McFarland, who had been missing and presumed drowned since April 24, was recovered around noon, five miles downstream of where he went into the water in Auburn.

Wardens say 43-year-old Christopher Lane from Litchfield found the boy’s body while kayaking the river this morning.  Lane told wardens he was looking for the boy’s body to help bring closure to his family.

Police say Lane found the boy’s body on the water’s surface very close to the Auburn and Durham town lines.  He called 911 and game wardens responded.

The Maine Warden Service says they want to thank the Auburn Police Department, first responders and the countless volunteers who have searched tirelessly the last several weeks.

Wardens say they hope Monday’srecovery can begin to provide closure for the McFarland family.
