Maine’s largest hospital says its patients who are covered under Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield will no longer receive in-network coverage.

According to the Bangor Daily News, MaineHealth says it can no longer provide coverage through Anthem for Maine Medical Center patients because the company owes the health system more than $70 million for services dating back over three years.

In a letter sent out to patients on Wednesday, MaineHealth said the changes will go into effect in 2023.

The system says Anthem has also reduced negotiated payments to Maine Medical Center that should not be in dispute, and that the company has been struggling to make payments on time. They also said Anthem incorrectly denied claims for 10,000 MaineHealth accounts last summer.

The Kaiser Family Foundation said that, in 2019, Anthem was the largest insurer in Maine, with a 69% market share.

Other MaineHealth facilities will continue to accept in-network coverage through Anthem.
