A dozen new electric vehicle charging stations are coming to Maine.

Financing for the expansion comes from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which is part of the federal bipartisan infrastructure law.

With the funding, MaineDOT will install charging stations in Augusta, Brunswick, Rockland, Bangor and several other communities. The Portland Press Herald reports that the locations were selected by Recharge Maine, a state program working to expand access to electrical vehicle charging stations.

Recharge Maine also received funds from the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan to install five additional charging sites in Penobscot, Aroostook and Washington counties.

The stations are expected to be operational next year.
