FORT KENT, Maine (AP) Anglers are trying to land one of the biggest trophy fish in Maine at a fishing derby in one of the most remote parts of the state.
The Fort Kent International Muskie Derby begins on Friday and runs to Sunday. Fishermen are seeking the muskie, or muskellunge, on the St. John River and its tributaries west of Grand Falls. That stretch of the St. John travels across the northern edge of the state at the border with Canada.
The winner of the tournament has a chance to take home $35,000, as well as a fish famous for putting up a fight.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife says muskie is one of the largest freshwater fish in the state and it’s capable of weighing more than 25 pounds.
