A 23-year-old man is dead, and two others have serious injuries from a head-on crash on Route 196 near the Merrymeeting Bridge in Topsham late Saturday night.

Police say they were sent to the scene where emergency crews performed life-saving efforts on a passenger in one of the vehicles, who was later pronounced dead after being taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

They say a 34-year-old man driving a GMC pickup truck and a 25-year-old woman driving a Volvo SUV were both seriously injured and were taken to Maine Medical Center.

Officers say a preliminary investigation shows one of the vehicles crossed the centerline, which caused the crash

They say a reconstructionist from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation, and police are asking anyone with information to contact Officer Lucas Shirland at 207-725-4337.

Police said the victim’s name is being withheld until family is notified.
