One person dead, dozens left homeless after Lewiston apartment fire

A fire that broke out at an apartment building in Lewiston on Saturday left one man dead and nearly 60 people displaced.

The fire was called in around 4:45 p.m. Saturday at the apartment house on Blake Street.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, 70-year-old Felicien Betu died of his injuries after jumping out of the top floor of the six-story building to escape the flames.

The building was destroyed and a nearby structure took damage as well.

No one else was injured. According to the Portland Press Herald, those who were displaced have been offered space at an emergency shelter set up by the Red Cross and the Androscoggin County Emergency Management Agency.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was expected to continue into Monday.
