Parts of central Maine now in severe drought

Areas of central Maine are now experiencing severe drought conditions.

According to Thursday’s update from the U.S. Drought Monitor, the places that are now in a severe drought cover about 7% of the state’s geographic area. That as about 70% of the state is now in a moderate drought, up from about 40% last week.

So far this year, Portland has seen about 14.4″ of rain, which is 8″ below average. Augusta’s rainfall is also 6.5″ below it’s average, getting 11.9″ since the beginning of the year.
