Police say a Maine man has been charged with attacking an officer at the federal building in Augusta while armed with a knife.

The first floor of the Edmund S. Muskie Building was evacuated Wednesday as police responded to a report of a man attacking a Homeland Security officer around 11:30 a.m. The suspect, 41-year-old Derik Broox Wight of Augusta, was shot by another officer and was hospitalized.

The Attorney General’s Office says Wight held the knife to the officer’s throat at one point.

Wight is facing up to 20 years in prison.
