Pickup Truck Goes Through Ice at Moosehead Lake

Moosehead Lakeshore Journal

There are no injuries after a pickup truck crashed through ice at a boat ramp on Moosehead Lake in Rockwood Sunday morning.

The Bangor Daily News reports Leanne Tapley was driving toward an ice fishing shack when her truck dropped through the ice and sank before stopping with the waterline just below the window.

Tapley had to straddle the side of the truck in the water before her husband arrived to grab her hand and help her jump safely onto sturdy ice.

Tapley was not injured and did not require medical treatment.

Rescuers say it’s a reminder that ice conditions are changing with warmer temperatures and rain.

The Moosehead Lakeshore Journal reports that areas near shorelines, ramps, and moving water can weaken much faster than the main lake.

Anyone heading out on the ice should use extreme caution and check conditions carefully.
