PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) A 17-year-old has been taken into custody and is charged with terrorizing after police say he made threats on social media.

The Portland Police Department said the student was arrested around 9 a.m. Wednesday for the messages, which were directed at Casco Bay High School students. Police seized a realistic-looking BB gun during his arrest.

Investigators believe the threat stems from a dispute between two different groups outside of school. Both Casco Bay High School and Portland Arts and Technology High School were closed Wednesday due to the threat. Portland police said they hoped classes could continue and that students would feel safe returning to school.

The suspect was issued a juvenile summons and released to the custody of his parents. Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
