OLD TOWN, MAINE (BDN) — An unidentified man had to be rescued from the Penobscot River after police had spent hours looking for him earlier Tuesday. The man was wanted for allegedly assaulting someone at Pembroke Pines Apartments.

Police had issued a warning on the individual, stating that he could be suicidal and that he might be armed with a knife. A Maine Forest Service helicopter and a K-9 unit had failed to locate the man before he was spotted by residents around 6:25 that morning running down Prentiss Street.

He had fled the scene and had run a mile west towards the river, where police saw him enter the river at the edge of Water street. River conditions prevented the police from perusing any further.

The suspect then washed up onto a large concrete block, where he was stranded for several hours.

An inflatable Maine Warden Service raft carrying two game wardens and Old Town police were then sent out to retrieve the man and take him into custody.
