A man accused of causing a standoff in Presque Isle was shot and killed by police on Thursday.

According to the Bangor Daily News, traffic on Main Street near UMaine at Presque Isle was blocked due to an alleged armed standoff, which started around noon.

Presque Isle police said the man was firing a gun into the air behind a business across from the school, and refused to stop or speak to law enforcement when they arrived.

Police said he then threatened them with the gun, at which point he was shot and killed.

The names of those involved have not been released. The case is being turned over to the Attorney General’s Office to investigate.

The UMPI campus was on lockdown during the incident.

Part of Main Street was closed to traffic for about an hour before it reopened.
