AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   Republican U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin’s adviser says the Maine congressman won’t respond to author Stephen King’s tweet lambasting Poliquin’s support from the National Rifle Association.

King, who lives in Bangor, called Poliquin an “NRA sweetheart” in a tweet Tuesday and urged people to not vote for the incumbent 2nd Congressional District representative in November. Poliquin adviser Brent Littlefield said the congressman is a strong Second Amendment supporter.

The New York Times named Poliquin as a top congressional recipient of NRA funding.

King said the newspaper found the National Rifle Association reported spending over $200,000 to help Poliquin’s political career.

The National Rifle Association’s advocacy arm has reported contributing $16,850 to Poliquin.

Federal campaign finance reports show the gun rights advocacy group independently spent about $68,000 opposing Poliquin’s opponents and over $100,000 to support Poliquin’s campaign.
