PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Police in Portland say they’ve arrested a man accused of stealing two vehicles.

Police responded to a report of a vehicle stolen from a parking garage on Newbury Street around 11:20 a.m. on Friday.

The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Donald Shead, who has no listed address. Police say he’s accused of stealing the vehicle from the garage after the owner had left behind the key and crashing through the exit gate.

Police say he exited that vehicle and then stole a van from a parking lot on Congress Street. They said he fled on foot when officers confronted him but was later taken into custody.

Police also received reports of items being stolen from their vehicles that were in the parking garage at the time of the vehicle thefts. Those items were recovered.

Shead was taken to Cumberland County Jail on charges of burglary to a motor vehicle, theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, two counts of theft by unauthorized use, two counts of criminal mischief, refusal to submit and Class B drug trafficking.

The Portland Police Department is asking anyone with information about the thefts to contact them at (207) 874-8575.
