PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN)  The Portland Police Department is urging business owners in the Old Port to look at their checkbooks after a string of commercial burglaries in the city.

Police say the burglaries have been taking place in the Old Port and there were no signs of forced entry.  However, the thief was targeting checks from the center of checkbooks that were left in unsecured desks and file cabinets.

Police say in most cases, businesses only learned about the stolen checks after they were cashed.

Police are asking business owners to look at their checkbooks and bank records to look for missing checks or unauthorized transactions.  Police say should you find something missing, immediately contact the bank to put a stop on the check and report the crime to police.

Police are also reminding businesses to always keep petty cash, checks and personal belongings locked in a secure location at all times.
