PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Beginning in 2021, customers at Portland restaurants and businesses will no longer be able to use single-use plastic straws.

In a unanimous vote Monday night, the Portland City Council approved the ban.

Those who support it say it will help reduce plastic pollution, and that there are better alternative materials to use. Others say plastic straws aren’t contributing to the pollution problem as much as other items.

Beginning in April of 2020, the straws will only be available upon request, with a full ban going into effect in January of 2021.
