Portland’s city councilors were set to take up a handful of key issues during Monday night’s meeting.

Councilors will meet to discuss the proposal for a new homeless shelter on Riverside Street. According to our info partners at CBS 13 news, the city will formalize it’s relationship with developers on the project.

The council will also vote on whether to extend the city’s state of emergency that was declared in response to the pandemic. If they don’t vote to extend, the declaration will end July 29th.

That decision could impact some workers whose wages have increased as a result of a hazard pay provision passed in November, which increases minimum wage during declared emergencies. It was ruled that the city cannot enforce the provision until next year, but many businesses have still chosen to offer hazard pay in the meantime.

Councilors were also planning to consider whether or not to extend outdoor dining, which has allowed restaurants and other businesses in the city’s Old Port area to use sidewalks and parking spots to serve customers during the pandemic. The council will consider extending outdoor dining until November 1st, regardless of whether a state of emergency remains in effect.
