The shooting death of Conservative activist Charlie Kirk is reaching some politicians here in Maine.

State Representative and fellow Conservative Republican Laurel Libby says she received a threatening message shortly after Kirk was killed.

“Just the day after Charlie Kirk was murdered, I got a voicemail, and that’s not unusual, I got a voicemail of a gentleman telling me that he and his church are praying that something unfortunate happens and that our family is put in a gas chamber,” said Libby.

Libby notes the Maine State Legislature held a bipartisan moment of silence earlier this year after a Democratic member of the Minnesota legislature and her husband were shot and killed in political violence.

She says it’s especially important now for both Conservatives and Liberals need to voice their thoughts because political violence is meant to shut down free speech.

“I would advocate that we need to continue to speak, to speak boldly and courageously and freely and not back down, because there are folks who would try to intimidate through threats and violence,” Libby said.

Libby became a flashpoint herself earlier this year after she posted the photo and name of a transgender athlete on social media, which sharply divided Republicans and Democrats.

The Trump administration is suing Maine over its policy allowing transgender girls in sports.

Just this week, the school district in Lincoln investigated a statement by a teacher that drew complaints and placed the teacher on leave.

The teacher’s union Biddeford has encouraged teachers to remove any political posts on social media, especially about Charlie Kirk, and noted some members of the school community had already been doxed.
