MEDWAY, Maine (WGAN)  An accident involving a Penobscot County Sheriff’s deputy is under investigation.

The sheriff’s office says Cpl. Daren Mason was driving on Pattagumpus Road Tuesday when he saw an ATV and dirt bike approaching.  According to police, Mason saw violations as they passed and turned around to conduct a traffic stop.

Police say as the deputy was trying to make the traffic stop, the dirt bike decelerated abruptly, forcing Cpl. Mason to take evasive action.  However, the dirt bike collided with the side of the deputy’s vehicle.

Police say the sheriff’s vehicle hit a frozen snowbank and came to a rest on top of it.  Cpl. Mason did not receive any injuries.

The rider on the dirt bike was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and was released the same day.

Police say the accident is under investigation.
