ROCKLAND, Maine (WGAN) The owners of a former construction business that failed to finish work for clients and owes more than $1 million is being sued by the state.

The Bangor Daily News reports Malcom and Elizabeth Stewart are named in the lawsuit filed by the state. They’re the former owners of Castle Builders in Union. The suit is being filed under the Unfair Trade Practices Law, in an effort to prevent the couple from soliciting business and to seek restitution for former customers.

Those customers said they were left with unfinished projects at their homes when the business closed without warning in September. It’s the largest case of alleged contractor fraud in Maine’s midcoast, according to investigators.

Court documents show the couple, who filed for bankruptcy, are currently living in South Carolina.
