Beachgoers at Long Sands Beach in York saw an unusual sea mammal Friday.

Stranded on the beach was a seal. Lifeguards and York Police officers protected the seal, which was later transported to a triage center for better care.

The Marine Mammals of Maine organization said the seal had been suffering respiratory infections.

The organization said the seal was the 234th stranded marine mammal in Maine this year.
