SOUTH PORTLAND – If you have  some business to do in South Portland such as at the Maine Mall and don’t want to wear your mask Sunday January 23 is the last day you can do so for a while.  That is because on Monday a mask mandate for public indoor places takes effect there joining Portland and Brunswick.

Unlike Portland and Brunswick however the South Portland mandate does not include any set fine for businesses that don’t comply, instead asking for voluntary compliance.  The city can fine a business business but says they would rather not but didn’t say how much the fine would be, which is $500 in Portland and in Brunswick.

Another key difference is that  South Portland doesn’t have an exception for businesses that require proof of vaccination.

The mandate will continue in South Portland while the seven-day average of new COVID cases for Cumberland County remains within the CDC’s definition of high or substantial transmission. If that count drops to a moderate or low transmission level for 10 consecutive days, the mandate will be suspended.
