A chilling act of vandalism has prompted an investigation by Maine State Police. A swastika appeared on a Black Lives Matter signs in one of several racist incidents in Maine this summer.

The incident highlights the prevalence of the national movement bringing awareness to systemic racism and police violence across the nation.

The sign which reads “Black brown LGBQT lives matter too” had been in the yard of Louisa Carl for less than a week before it was vandalized. The swastika painted on with red spray paint appeared between late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Carl, who is the mother of two Black teenage son, said they placed the Black Lives Matter sign in their yard earlier this summer but it had been taken, so, they put a sturdier sign this week.

“You stand up and literally just say that your life matters, and someone paints a Nazi symbol on your sign. That is the reality in America,” Carl said.

Maine State Police confirmed the investigation is on-going.
