14-year-old Lucas Drinkwater led a team effort that prevented a would-be drowning at Gooch’s Beach this weekend.

The teen was out surfboarding with his sister when he heard screams coming from far out into the surf. without hesitation, Lucas began paddling his way out to the mother-daughter pair struggling in the surf.

“She was struggling to stay up, exhausted, ” Drinkwater commented, “When I got there, she was literally going underwater, so I had to lift her up onto my surfboard”

With the help of a passer-by on a boogie board, the two successfully returned both women to dry land. One of which was taken to the hospital, expected to make a full recovery.

Kennebunk Fire Rescue Division Chief John Brady expressed his admiration for Drinkwater’s bravery, as well as reminding the public to check surf advisories.
