Tens of thousands lose power as Maine gets smacked by powerful winds

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Strong wind gusts swept through the state late Sunday night into early Monday morning, taking down trees, branches and power lines.

On the WGAN Morning News Monday, Emily Spencer from Central Maine Power said 35,000 customers lost power at some point, while outages peaked at about 28,000 at one time.

According to the National Weather Service, gusts whipped to 61 mph in Eastport in down east Maine, 57 mph in York on the southern coast and 56 mph in Augusta.
