The Portland Water District will begin testing wastewater for monkeypox.

According to the Bangor Daily News, a spokesperson for the district said Wednesday it’s partnering with Verily Life Sciences to test wastewater at the East End facility.

The district says the plant serves 60,000 people.

As of Wednesday, the state had only confirmed three cases of monkeypox, but health officials expect to see more as the virus spreads throughout the country.
