A private college in Maine has made changes to it’s vaccination policy and will require students to be vaccinated when they return in the fall.

Thomas College in Waterville announced Wednesday that all in-person students, faculty and staff will need to have their shots.

A few weeks ago, the college said it would not require vaccinations but require those not vaccinated to follow additional safety restrictions, according to the Portland Press Herald. However, in light of the more contagious Delta variant of coronavirus and it’s rapid spread, the school says it’s taking the extra step to protect students and staff.

Those who aren’t immunized by the time they arrive on campus will have to follow a testing protocol and wear a mask. They’ll have until September 30th to get fully vaccinated, with some exceptions.

The announcement comes on the heels of similar decisions by other colleges around the state, including the UMaine system, Bates College, the University of New England, Bowdoin College, and Husson University.

School leaders at those institutions also cited the Delta variant as the reason for implementing vaccine mandates.
