Freeport town officials say they were targeted in a ransomware attack, but luckily did not have to pay the hackers responsible for it.

According to CBS 13, hackers demanded $10,000 to release encrypted data from the town office’s computer system last week. Town Manager Peter Joseph says they had a backup of the data, and didn’t need to pay the ransom.

The internet and phone lines were taken offline voluntarily by the town so they could conduct a review, with the system going back online on Monday.

During a meeting with town councilors, Joseph said it didn’t appear there was any data theft.

Joseph says they’re still looking into the attack and plans to provide an update on their findings at the next council meeting.
